Keeping your Social Media Simple

Laura Roeder, a social media consultant, and the founder of Creating Fame, wrote 5 Social Media Lessons Learned From Working with A Hollywood Actress. In her blog, she gives tips on how to use social media to your best advantage to produce individual desired results.

Roder offers up 5 main points described in her blog on how to do this, which are to:

  1. Find your blog's core purpose
  2. Ditch the distractions
  3. Streamline your social networking
  4. Focus on your talents
  5. Take advantage of your opportunities

I agree with Roeder on all of the above suggestions. Using social media should be about engaging your audience, and focusing on the content you want to deliver. Too often, businesses and individuals become distracted by features, or add-ons available to customize the appearance of a blog or networking site. This eats up valuable time which would be better spent delivering information to readers. It is good to remember that less is more, and the more complex wordy content, and design elements that are used sometimes simply look cluttered to the reader; thus increasing the chance for dismissal.

Laura suggests individuals try every type of social media, and then to decide what works for them, and to stick to it. If Facebook will not assist in achieving a goal, just as he friend Brea did not benefit from it; then it shouldn't be used. With services ranging from pod casts to video blogs, most people will be able to find something well-suited to their talents and preferences. It will be easy to use a medium you enjoy, as you will have fun performing these tasks.

It takes hard work to make a name for yourself online with social media. In order to accomplish this, one will have to do something worthy of talking about to have people talk about you. Be an opinion leader, and be original with your published content, and success will follow. That's it!
